Canal d'Orléans
The Canal d'Orléans was opened in 1692 by the Duke of Orléans, with the authorisation of Louis XIV, in order to drain the forest. The canal runs for 79 kilometres from Montargis to Orléans, and links up with the Canal du Loing. It fell into disuse in 1920, and is now used only for tourism. Today the Etangs des Bois et de la Vallée and the preparation of certain sections for boat cruises make it a major tourist route through the Orléans forest.
