Born in Paris on 22 July 1819, Ernest Cosson developed a genuine passion for botany as a child. He became a doctor in 1847, after presenting his thesis on surgery; however, he never truly practised medicine. He studied flora, from Port Juvénal to Montpellier and around Dordives, where he enjoyed the countryside surrounding the Château de Thurelles, also travelling throughout Europe to study plants. He took part in the exploration of Algeria where he paid ten visits from 1852 to 1861. His herbarium was bequeathed to the National Museum of Natural History in Paris upon his death in 1889.
