Born in Gien, Étienne Marcel gained the rank of captain in the 3e bataillon de la Garde nationale stationed in Loiret at the age of just seventeen. This position was to mark the starting point of an illustrious, 42-year military career! He was named Grand Officer of the National Order of the Legion of Honour, and Knight of the Order of Saint-Louis. He served as mayor of Saint-Gondon from 1857 to 1877. He shared his time between his property L’Ormette, in Saint-Gondon, and his house in Gien, from 1857 to his death.
