Born in Cravant, Gaston Valadon was the most talented DIY specialist and became the village’s much-needed mechanical repair man. In 1919, he acquired a mill in Beaugency which he converted into a home and beekeeping workshop, where he produced honey and beeswax, which he was quick to exploit in the form of polishing wax. He started by producing cans of polish, to quickly realise that they were difficult to open. He then developed the ‘butterfly’ system - a small key riveted to the side of the metal can to facilitate opening. His efforts were recompensed at the 1922 Concours Lépine contest. His invention was rewarded, then patented.
