Born on 6 August 1904 in Orléans, Jean Zay became a lawyer in 1928 and was quick to engage in politics. In 1932, at the age of 27, he was elected Deputy of Loiret for the radical socialist party. He was re-elected in 1936, the year that also marked his appointment as Minister of National Education and Fine Arts. He enlisted in the French Army in 1939, but was imprisoned by the Vichy government for desertion in the face of the enemy. He was assassinated in 1944 by the militia and was buried in the Grand Cemetery of Orléans from 1945 to 2015, the year he was transferred to the Panthéon.
