Born on 21 April 1844 in Courtenay, Paul Rolier was a navy captain during the Franco-German War of 1870. On 24 September, he took off aboard a hot-air balloon with a franc-tireur and some 250kg of mail, including an important letter for the Armée de la Loire. Driven by the winds, they rose to an altitude of around 5,000m and were obliged to unballast, before finally landing in Norway. Their balloon finally travelled a record distance of 1,246km in 14 hours and 14 minutes.
